The Art of Texting: The Do’s and Don’ts of Texting

Texting has opened up a whole new way to communicate and of course flirt.  If you have someone’s cell phone number you can communicate with them in many different ways including hitting on them, telling them what you need from the store, fighting with them, and so much more.  There is no limit as to what you can do with texting, but there are some rules that you can follow that will keep you out of trouble, regardless of why you are communicating and what you are communicating to someone through text.

The Things You Should Never Do When Texting

1. Don’t read too much into anything.  If you don’t know what something means that you are told via text you should not respond.  Instead you should let the person know that you will talk later instead of assuming what their intent was.  Until you are able to talk you should avoid reading too much into anything that was said via text.
2. Don’t settle for misspellings.  Where you can, write out the whole word and don’t use too many abbreviations.  You don’t know how much of the abbreviations will be understood and the lat thing you want to be is the person who sends the texts that don’t seem to make any sense or can be misinterpreted.
3. Be honest.  Don’t flirt if you don’t really like the person because they can perceive that you like them more than you do and this will cause problems later.
4. Don’t fight or argue through text, again so much of what you “say” can be taken out of context and it can cause more problems than it is worth.  Wait until you can talk on the phone or face to face.
5. Don’t share important information via text.  Save important information for when you can be more personal.

The Do’s of Texting

1. Text just to say hello or share some affection.  You can text little messages such as “Hey honey.  Love you” or something of this nature.  This will let the person know that you are thinking of them without having the message taken out of context.
2. If you are separated by space, texting can be a great way to work the people that you care about into your daily life.  Texting can save you on long distance fees and you can also share a moment any time during the day.
3. Text to break the ice.  Meeting someone for drinks for the first time?  Texting is a great way to break the ice before you meet.
4. Respond to text messages that are sent to you ASAP.  If you wait too long the person might assume that you are angry at them or that you didn’t appreciate what they had to say.
5. Keep things light and straight forward.  If you leave any room for perception you could find yourself in trouble.
